CHAPTER 17

“Icame out the back.” The young woman studied Suzie.

“Okay?” Suzie’s tone softened as she noticed her take a slight step back. “It’s all right. We only want to help find out what happened to Sandy. Did you see her here?”

“Yes.” She glanced around, then sighed. “But listen, you didn’t hear any of this from me.”

“Just tell us whatever you know, and we’ll keep you out of it.” Mary let the door fall all the way closed behind her.

“I saw her.” She repeated her words as she drew a deep breath. “But she wasn’t alone. She came here with someone most of the time. She met him here and they talked way in the back.”

“Do you work here?” Mary surveyed her shorts and plain stained T-shirt.

“I’m a dishwasher, so I’m always around.” She glanced at the door again. “Maya doesn’t like us talking to any customers. She always says to me ‘Poppy, keep your mouth shut.’ But I know this is important because I knew the man Sandy met with. I recognized him.”

“You did?” Suzie shifted closer to her. “Who was it?”

“Chief Harding.” Poppy whispered the name. “But you can’t tell him I told you because I’m still on probation. He caught me drinking and I’m not twenty-one, yet. He can cause me a whole lot of trouble if he finds out I told anyone it was him.”

“Did he threaten you?” Suzie asked.

“No. But he’s the chief.” Poppy crossed her arms. “Are you going to tell him?”

“No, we won’t tell him.” Mary looked into her eyes. “Do you remember anything they talked about?”

“Mostly about the people who live by the campground. And money. He said he didn’t have it. She told him she had to have it, and back and forth like that. But that’s all I heard.” Poppy shrugged. “I figured they just had some kind of deal going, until I saw the other guy.”

“The other guy?” Mary glanced over at Suzie, then looked back at the young woman. “Who?”

“I didn’t recognize him. He would walk in wearing a baseball cap and glasses and be close enough to hear them. He was watching them, and listening in. Then when they left, he would take off his cap and glasses. I thought that was weird. That’s all I know. I swear.” Poppy started to turn away.

“Wait, please.” Suzie took a step toward her. “Can you just describe him to us? That’s it. You just tell us what he looked like, then we’ll be on our way, okay?”

“All right.” Poppy fidgeted with the hem of her T-shirt. “He was quite tall and skinny with curly hair.”

“What color was his hair?” Suzie realized that it could be Alfred.

“It was dark.” Poppy paused for a moment. “Black or brown. I’m not sure.”

“Do you know if his name was Alfred?” Suzie glanced over at Mary, then back at Poppy. “The reporter?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know him. I have to go.” Poppy jogged off around the side of the restaurant.

“Interesting.” Suzie walked over to Mary.
